Consider Suwon’s Haenggung-dong for a palace and neighbourhood lanes, Dumulmeori in Yangpyeong for time beside the river, or Incheon’s Chinatown and Open Port area for a station-based street walk. These are three alternatives for a day out, rather than three destinations to combine.

Choose the kind of day before choosing the train

The table is not a ranking by journey time. Your starting address in Seoul and the available connections change the comparison. The shortest time on a train does not necessarily produce the shortest overall day.

Choose between a palace, riverside rest or historic streets. Then check the walking involved and the journey home. Add a meal and café only when they fit that core plan.

These outings head in different directions

Suwon lies south of Seoul, Yangsuri to the east and Incheon’s Open Port area to the west. This schematic is not to scale and does not show rail alignments. Choose one direction rather than treating the pins as a circuit.

Google Maps ↗

Suwon: put the timed attraction first

Search separately for Hwaseong Haenggung, the palace, and Suwon Hwaseong, the surrounding fortress walls. Allow time to continue from Suwon Station to the palace. Visiting the attraction with an entry deadline first gives lunch and the neighbourhood walk a clearer place in the day.

A complete wall walk and a half-day in Haenggung-dong involve different amounts of walking. For a first visit, add one selected section rather than assuming you will cover everything. Check admission and opening notices with Suwon Cultural Foundation for your date.

Dumulmeori: include the station-to-river journey

Yangsu Station is a rail access point for Dumulmeori. Arriving there is not the same as arriving at the waterfront: allow for the walk or local transport in both directions. If the river is your reason to go, leave time to stay instead of adding more sights.

Our suggested local allowance is four to five hours, excluding the return journey from Seoul and transport waits. In rain or strong wind, shorten the riverside part, focus on an indoor meal and café, or choose another day.

Incheon: the station is not the airport

Incheon Tourism Organization uses Incheon Station as a starting point for Chinatown and the Open Port district. The station is served by Line 1 and the Suin–Bundang Line. It is different from the AREX airport terminal stations, so check the complete station name.

Begin with one compact area of Chinatown lanes and historic port streets. Decide separately whether to add the uphill section toward Jayu Park. If you also want Wolmido, check the extra journey and remove another part of the day if necessary.

Add three time blocks for the full day

Calculate accommodation to first stop, time at the destination, and final stop back to accommodation. A hypothetical 90 minutes each way plus a four-and-a-half-hour visit totals seven and a half hours. This illustrates the calculation; it is not a measured journey time for any of the three trips.

Budget for local buses or taxis as well as return rail travel, admission, food and coffee. Splitting a taxi changes the cost per person, not the vehicle’s total fare. Put actual fares and selected menus into your budget once you have a route.

Save the return connection before leaving

Check the destination’s operating notice, the weather and your last useful connection home. Decide in advance what you will drop if a restaurant queue runs long, rather than assuming every later activity can move back.

This is a planning guide researched from official sources, not a first-hand visit report. For a wheelchair, stroller or stair-free journey, check the actual route from station exit to entrance. The schematic does not establish accessibility or gradients.

Frequently asked questions

Which destination is fastest from Seoul?

It depends on your departure address and first actual stop. Compare door-to-destination journeys for the same date and departure time.

Does the Dumulmeori allowance include the train from Seoul?

No. Four to five hours is our suggested local visit allowance. Return rail travel and waiting are additional.

Can I visit the Open Port area on an airport arrival day?

Check when you will clear arrivals, luggage arrangements and attraction hours. Incheon Airport and Incheon Station are different destinations. For a late landing, settle your accommodation transfer first.

Summary

Choose Suwon for a palace and lanes, Dumulmeori for riverside rest or Incheon for historic port streets. Focus on one destination and include travel after the station and the return connection. Local visit allowances exclude the Seoul round trip; calculate costs from your actual transport and meal choices.
