At a first restaurant in Korea, check four things: seating, the unit of the order, how to order, and when to pay. There is no single system for every venue. A price marked “one serving” can still have a two-serving minimum, and an ordering screen does not necessarily take payment.

Check seating and the ordering system
Look for a waiting list or seating instructions at the entrance. Once seated, check whether orders go through a menu and server, table screen, counter or kiosk. KTO describes the growing use of self-service and ordering machines.
Some screens offer language choices or photographs, but English is not guaranteed. Check the order confirmation and whether payment is complete. If unsure, ask “주문된 건가요?” — “Has the order gone through?”

Follow the venue’s water and side-dish notices
Some venues ask you to collect water or cutlery; others bring them. A call button, if present, can be used to reach staff, but do not assume every table has one.
KTO describes tipping as generally not expected in Korea. For extra side dishes, follow the restaurant’s own signs and ask what is included. Do not interpret a self-service counter as a promise that every extra is free or unlimited. If you avoid an ingredient, ask specifically before ordering rather than relying on a dish’s name.
Keep a few short Korean phrases ready
You can point to a menu item and confirm the quantity even without an English menu. Ask whether a change is possible; if the kitchen cannot make it, choose another dish. The phrases below are original editorial communication examples.
| Situation | Korean | English |
|---|---|---|
| Solo dining | 한 명도 식사할 수 있나요? | Can one person dine here? |
| Serving size | 이 메뉴는 1인분인가요? | Is this one serving? |
| Spice request | 덜 맵게 해 주실 수 있나요? | Could you make it less spicy? |
| Ingredient | 이 음식에 ___이 들어가나요? | Does this dish contain ___? |
| Takeaway | 포장해 주세요. | To go, please. |
| Payment | 카드로 결제할게요. | I would like to pay by card. |
Choose a meal and café in the same area
Seoul Tourism Organization highlights Yeonnam and Seongsu as café areas. The schematic locates them alongside Myeongdong; it is not a verified list of individual restaurants. Save one meal stop, a nearby café and one backup if the first queue is too long.
At a café, decide between dine-in and takeaway
Confirm whether you will stay or take the order away, then choose temperature, size and extras. If a venue displays a one-drink-per-person or time-limit policy, check it for your group. These conditions are not universal across all cafés.
Keep the order number or pager and follow the collection instructions. A dessert shown in an old photograph may not be on today’s menu. Check the current display, and follow any cup-return notice when leaving.
Check the branch and order deadline before walking over
Save the Korean address so you do not choose another branch with the same name. A restaurant may be open but unable to take orders during a break or after last order. Card acceptance and successful authorization also depend on the venue and your card.
This guide does not supply newly verified restaurant ratings or opening hours. If you are still choosing an area, use the neighbourhood comparison. Once you have a venue, check its own menu and same-day notice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I order one serving as a solo traveller?
It depends on the venue and dish. Check whether they seat one person and whether a minimum order applies before sitting down.
Are extra side dishes always free?
Do not assume every extra at every venue is included. Check self-service and additional-charge notices, and ask staff.
Will kiosks have English and accept my foreign card?
That varies by machine and venue. If the language or payment does not work, ask staff about another ordering or payment method.
Summary
Check seating, the serving unit, ordering method and payment timing. A one-serving price can still have a minimum quantity, while self-service, extras and last orders vary by venue. At cafés, choose dine-in or takeaway first. Save Korean addresses and a few useful phrases before your outing.
